Research and development

The Welding Institute in Ljubljana carries out research and development projects for industry in the field of welding. The research group has six full-time doctors and ten engineers with research registration.

What are the main research directions?

  • new methods of education,
  • basic research of welding processes, mainly MIG, resistance spot welding (RSW) and friction stir welding (FSW),
  • the resistance welding process and adaptive control,
  • weldability of materials,
  • metallographic and non-destructive testing.

What research equipment do you have?

  • modern equipment from renowned manufacturers for TIG, MIG, MAG, manual arc, flame, plasma, ultrasonic and induction welding, cladding, metallisation and ceramic coating (Fronius, ESAB, Varstroj, Kemppi, Gys, OTC, Iskra and others),
  • a resistance welding laboratory with adaptively controlled machines, including with ultrasound (Bosch Rexroth, Matuschek, Schiacky, Soyer and others),
  • an automatic welding laboratory (Varstroj, Bosch and others),
  • a metallographic laboratory with a Struers sample preparation line, Niton and Spectro (XRF) devices and Zeiss digital microscopy,
  • measurement of toughness, micro- and macrohardness and Vickers, Brinell and Rockwell hardness (Zwick),
  • a laboratory for universal tensile tests up to 500 kN (3 Zwick machines),
  • laboratories for computer-controlled measurement of pressure, flow, tightness, forces, torque, temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, dimensions, strength, stress and current,
  • an NDT laboratory with 12 X-ray machines (film and digital images) and ultrasonic, PT, MT, UTT and LT devices (Balteau, Andrex, Krautkramer and others),
  • a complete mechanical workshop for sample preparation.

Which projects are under way?

ProjectContent
FIVEinnovative scalable solutions for micro-credentials in vocational education and training
IQMETdevelopment of advanced welding training methods using AR and VR technologies, with real-time feedback and an emphasis on sustainable learning
BETwork-based blended learning including recognition of prior learning; exchange of knowledge between EU countries

How can I cooperate?

We offer companies research, optimisation of materials and welding methods, testing, and opinions and assessments of the condition of materials. Describe the problem or idea and we will propose a way of cooperating.

Frequently asked questions
