Ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTT) course

The ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTT) course prepares you for the exam and the VARcert certificate to EN ISO 9712. UTT is a sub-method without classified levels; training takes at least 3 days.

What is ultrasonic thickness measurement and when is it used?

Ultrasonic thickness measurement allows wear and corrosion to be monitored in process systems. The method is a sub-method of ultrasonic testing and has no classified certification levels.

What are the aims of the UTT course?

  • explain the theoretical background of ultrasonic techniques
  • calibrate ultrasonic equipment
  • measure the thickness of metallic materials and determine the amount of attenuation
  • find and evaluate thicknesses, multiple layers and laminations
  • select the correct type of probe
  • report the position and size of defects
  • interpret the results against the requirements of the standards

Who is the UTT course for?

All personnel, including inspectors, engineers and supervisors, who need basic knowledge of ultrasonic thickness and multi-layer measurement.

When is the next UTT course?

Dates for 2026 under the education plan: autumn 2026 in Ljubljana and Maribor; the plan states 3 days. Announced dates are on the page Course dates and exams.

Recertification under the 2026 plan: Ljubljana: by arrangement.

What does the syllabus cover?

The syllabus is in line with the requirements of the VARcert scheme DP-202 (at least 3 days of training depending on the complexity of the method). The exam consists of a general part (30 questions, 2 minutes per question, no literature), a specific part (20 questions, 3 minutes per question, standards allowed) and a practical part (two samples: plate and pipe, 2 hours).

Frequently asked questions
